from the beauty and the beast fic hesitantly titled ‘MOUNTAIN GOATS NO CHILDREN DOT MP3’
He’s been in love before — he’s bedded other women before — but it’s never felt like this. Something precious, and rare. Something to savour slowly, over the course of a lifetime together.
”That was why the staff didn’t say anything when you asked,” he says eventually. “The pressure that would put on a person, to know that they had the lives of an entire castle at stake if they didn’t develop feelings for me . . . It wouldn’t have been fair.”
“I can see why,” Belle says. “I can almost feel that strain, even though it’s retrospective. I don’t know what I would’ve done if I’d known beforehand.” She brushes a strand of loose hair away from her face, before twisting in her seat to look at him face-on. “Didn’t that put the same amount of pressure on you, though?”
“In a way, I suppose so. But I got us into this mess; it was only fair that the Enchantress give me a way out of it as well.”
“No, I mean — would you have fallen in love with anyone who walked through those doors? Even if you were a poor match, or you didn’t fit together?”
He thinks for a moment, before answering. “To be honest, I don’t know. What I do know, dearest, is that I’m so very thankful that it was you who marched through those doors and knocked some sense into me. I think I would have fallen in love with you even without the threat of the curse hanging over me. I hope so, anyway.”
She smiles thoughtfully, clearly thinking over his words. He wants to know what her thoughts are — wants to be able to read her face as easily as he reads Shakespeare — but he lets it be for now. They can spend their whole lives learning each other by heart thanks to her.
